Apartment in St. Petersburg burns down due to laptop left charging 27 October 2024

A fire broke out in a two-room apartment on Bestuzhevskaya Street in St. Petersburg , the Russian Emergencies Ministry reported on its Telegram channel.

The department believes that the cause of the fire could have been a laptop left on charge, which “heated up to the point of fire.” The owner recently picked up the computer from repair. Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire over an area of 20 square meters.

Experts from the Roskachestvo Digital Expertise Center told Gazeta.Ru that if you do not remove the charger from the socket, it may catch fire or even explode. The risks are minimal, but already this year in Russia there have been cases of fires caused by chargers left in the network. This is due to the fact that there are voltage surges in the household electrical network. They can happen quite often and are capable of disabling even the most reliable devices. In addition, when adapters are constantly left connected to the network, their service life will be reduced by a couple of years.
