Former senator and founder of the pharmaceutical group Biotek Boris Shpigel, released from serving his sentence due to health reasons, left the Matrosskaya Tishina pretrial detention center for subsequent hospitalization. This was reported to TASS by his lawyer Oleg Sorokin .
“Our client has been released. In the near future, he plans to be hospitalized for further full treatment,” the defense attorney said.
According to Sorokin, the money from the sale of all previously seized printed publications will go toward paying off the fine that the court imposed on Shpigel as an additional punishment.
On November 5, the court released Shpigel from punishment in the bribery case due to health reasons. The prosecutor’s office had petitioned for the ex-senator’s release . Its representatives confirmed that the medical report regarding Shpigel was drawn up in accordance with the law, and that he does indeed have illnesses that prevent him from serving his sentence in a penal colony.
According to the investigation, between June 3, 2019 and September 29, 2020, former Penza Region Governor Ivan Belozertsev received a bribe from Shpigel in the form of money and Swiss watches worth more than 30 million rubles. For the money and jewelry received, the former governor ensured the conclusion of state contracts with the company OAO FARMATSIYA.
In January 2024, the Izmailovsky District Court of Moscow sentenced Shpigel to 11 years in prison, and Belozertsev was given a preventive measure in the form of 12 years in prison.
